Great Taste Trail
The Nelson-Tasman Great Taste Trail is one of 19 trails that make up the New Zealand Cycle Trail. It is a scenic 175km ride, that takes you through the Abel Tasman National Park, cafes and vineyards. It starts at Nelson Airport, where there is stunning coastal views over Tasman Bay, Waimea Estuary and the Western Ranges, including Mt Arthur, Mt Owen and the Crusader.
You pass over boardwalks along the edge of the Waimea Estuary, where birds are plentiful, including the white heron. The trail then crosses to Rabbit Island, where you can catch the Mapua Ferry with your bikes on board and take a trip to Mapua Wharf. From December 2013 the cycle route will continue north-west from Mapua to Motueka, known for it's award winning wineries and then to Kaiteritere, the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park.
Mapua has it all, spectacular scenery, beaches, vineyards, arts & crafts and a excellent selection of cafes and restaurants.
There are a number of award winning vineyards, from Pinot Noir to Chardonnay and unusual fruit wines to liquers.
For the lovers of arts and crafts, there are a number of products to be found in the local flea markets. From hand-carved wooden creations, pottery, to modern and traditional artwork.
Down at the Mapua Wharf the Coolstore Gallery has evolved over the last 10 years to become the largest collection of original local and New Zealand art, sculpture and jewellery to be found anywhere in the region.
